Bio

Mijke Ellen van der Zee is a genderqueer fine artist based in Rotterdam. She makes art about genderdiversity. She also works as an art teacher at the university of Rotterdam and as a freelance art educator. In her freetime she's a dragking performer in the nightlife of Amsterdam.


Mijke was born on September 8th 1975 in Zwolle, the Netherlands. At very young age she was convinced she wanted to become a teacher. As an adolescent she also became interested in arts and she made drawings in every white spot of her schoolbooks, mostly sur-realistic drawings.

Mijke's interest in the Arts are very wide. She mostly makes paintings and videos, but sometimes she enjoys to make photos, sculptures poems or doing performances. She uses the materials which suits best for the concept she wants to work out.

At the moment Mijke follows the 'Art & Design Teacher' course at the School of Arts 'Willem de Kooning' in Rotterdam. She has her own company 'kijk eens... kunst' and works as an art teacher at the University Inholland in Rotterdam and the Hague. Furthermore Mijke is the curator for the art program of the biennial TranScreen Film Festival in Amsterdam.
